Expanded pulmonary function
testing now at Healthplex
PULMONARY FUNCTION TESTS
(PFT) measure the amount of air in
the lungs and the speed of the air
moving through the airways. These
tests allow physicians to assess
the presence, characteristics and
location of respiratory illness. The
doctor can choose from a variety of
tests, including:
●●
Spirometry, which measures how
well the lungs exhale
●●
Lung volume, which detects
restrictive lung diseases in which
a person cannot inhale a normal
volume of air
●●
DLCO or lung diffusion capacity,
which provides an estimate of how
efficiently the lungs transfer oxygen
from the air into the bloodstream
●●
Maximum voluntary ventilation,
which measures the maximum
volume of gas that a person can
inhale and exhale by voluntary
effort per minute
The PFT is the gold standard in
diagnosing chronic obstructive
pulmonary disease (COPD) and
determines its severity. This test
helps establish the presence and
severity of emphysema, bronchial
asthma, restrictive lung disease,
and the progression of pulmonary
sarcoidosis and other interstitial
lung diseases.
Kadlec’s new VMAX® testing
system provides impulse oscillometry
system (IOS) testing, which
measures airway resistance. The
new design of the testing booth also
accommodates more patients.
Other types of testing offered
through the expanded pulmonary
function lab are bronchial stress
testing, cardiopulmonary stress
testing, methacholine challenge
testing and six-minute walk testing.
Kadlec’s larger, centralized
respiratory therapy and testing lab is
now open at Kadlec Healthplex.
