when I did, Tom would not be here
today,” said Kathy. “He told me the
kind of heart attack Tom had is called
a ‘Widow Maker’ because most do
not survive it.”
He also said Tom’s heart had
stopped twice and had to be restarted.
Timing, in Tom’s case, was
everything. Kathy, who wasn’t
supposed to be home, made the
right call, rather than trying to drive
him somewhere. He was also taken
directly to a hospital that has the
capability to perform emergency
open heart surgery.

On to Cardio Rehab
Tom spent five days at Kadlec,
and eight weeks after surgery, he
started a 36-visit program at Kadlec’s
Cardio Rehab. His program included
monitored workouts, education and
encouragement.
“When Dr. Jamali first suggested
cardio rehab, I wondered why I would
want to do that. I thought I could do
it on my own. But then I realized it
was going to be much better for me,
and it was so great,” he said.
“I’m doing really well. I feel
excellent,” he said.

“There is an expression in
cardiac care that ‘time equals
muscle,’” said Cass Bilodeau,
Kadlec’s director, Regional Clinical
Relations and Development. “It
is important to be in a facility
that has the most comprehensive
heart care in case you need
emergent heart surgery, just as
Tom Frater did. Therefore, you
avoid the need to transfer to
where that higher level of care is
available.”
As the only health care facility
in the region capable of open
heart surgery, Kadlec’s heart care
teams are available around the
clock, including skilled physicians,
cardiologists and cardiovascular
surgeons to provide quick
diagnosis and prompt intervention
with angioplasty and stenting or
open heart surgery when needed.
